im going through an inherited collection and trying to learn what's what. I came across this 1830's dime and it seemed nicer than the rest and was wondering what peoples opinion of it is.

aside from the iphone pictures not looking the best what would make it looked cleaned? its been in a paper/plastic coin holder since at least 1980 ish. not arguing that it wasnt at some point I just don't know what to look for.

Well, I'll give it a shot. The stains on the rims suggest that it was buried beneath the ground at some point. It's probably a metal detector find.

not that I think it will help but this is the holder I took the coin out of. the plastic had broken and it was falling out. the only information I have is that this was part of my great grandfathers collection and he passed in 1985 I think, and no one aside from me had touched them since then.

Don't see it as a metal detector find, just a cleaned coin.

I agree with Coinfrog. Still a nice coin.

Old cleaning. Still worth much more than the $3.75 purchase price!

Definitely a neat coin. Can't say if cleaned or not given photo and how washed out the picture is. The photo background isn't that sharp so I'm guessing the coin looks a bit different in hand than per the attached photos. That said, also appears to be a 'Medium 0' variety in lieu of the 'Small 0'. There were apparently a couple different sizes of the '0' in the 10 C. on the coins reverse. I'd grade it a high 'F' to low 'VF' which would value the coin in the $65 - $100 range if not cleaned or messed with. Regardless, still a neat old coin. At almost two hundred years old, to think it to be a predecessor to the seated liberty, barber, mercury and Roosevelt dimes is an interesting aside to say the least. And to boot, it obviously was considered of enough significance to your great grandfather that he spent his hard earned cash and purchased it thus adding it to his collection. Enjoy it, it's not your everyday coin you'll see in a collection.

Caveat: I'm a capped bust Half Dime guy, and only have a toe in the waters of the dimes. Having said that: this coin looks like a JR-6, which is a die marriage comprised of 1830 Obverse 3 and reverse AX. According to my copy of the "Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide," it is a rarity-2 die marriage, which is identified as "Fairly Common," with an estimated 501 to 1,250 examples extant. I don't have enough info to know if your coin was cleaned or not but I'd say it looks OK to me, and the natural patina I think is attractive, rather than off-putting. Coinfacts page has info and images so you can validate my attribution. https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin...ium/38843/20
