I have an opportunity to purchase this note. I only have this photo from the seller. Is there anything about this note that screams fake from what you can see here? Thanks for your thoughts.

If it were me I would not spend any money on it until I could see better pics of both sides of the note.

A $500 bill in 1864 is like having a $10,000 bill today.

I wouldn't buy it without seeing the reverse.

How much are they asking?
How did this buying opportunity arise?

This is an online auction. There are several notes in the group and I've gone onto all websites I know about that list known CSA fakes. I've found one $10 note in the group that is a known fake, but none of the others, including this one, are on any of the lists. That certainly doesn't mean that they aren't fake, but given the appearance of the handwritten ink, haphazard cut lines, etc., they "look" OK. I don't necessarily collect these notes, but figured if I could get the group for a decent price I'd give it a try.

I'll ask the seller if they can provide photos of the reverses. And, I realize this would be a gamble unworthy of a large bid - very low is the only way to go. Thanks for your replies.

The auction house is working on reverse images. I told them that at least one of the notes is a modern replica - perhaps that inspired them to get those other images added to the lot.

Procede with caution. Return privileges? Reputable auction house?

I checked the Crutch Williams website and the serial number was not listed as a fake for a T-64 $500 CSA note.

What condition does the seller claim the note is in ?

Thanks, @Steve. No statements regarding condition - it's one of those "make your own determination from the photos and bid at your own risk" scenarios. I haven't reviewed the seller's terms and conditions, yet, but the auction doesn't close for several days.

I will be back if/when they provide the reverse photos for follow-up.

I would be careful about this note. "Confederate States Paper Money" by G. Cuhaj shows examples of this note both authentic and a Cuban contemporary counter-feit. It lists authentic plate letters as A to D and the counter-feit with plate letters WA-ZA. There is nothing I can see that indicates this is a contemporary counterfeit but the difference in value is approx. 7x more for authentic than the Cuban counter-feit.
Authentic notes had a printing of 150,428 and the Cuban counter-feit of 1,671,444.

If genuine it is in excellent condition, XF or better, and worth several hundred USD.

Something about it doesn't seem right but I'm not expert, just a first impression.

Maybe it's my eyes, but the note kinda has a wonky, right leaning cut to it.

Received reverse photo of the note this morning. I appreciate the continued opinions of the CCF experts!
