Hi I was wondering if this is a 1961 Full Steps Nickel? It looks to be in a uncirculated condition. Any information or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

@otc, it looks to me like that bottom step wasn't fully struck up, but I'm interested to see what others think.

This looks like a proof strike, which is why the steps are stronger than normal.

Isn't the NGC criteria 5FS?

According to the Bowers guide, a mint state 1961 6FS is very rare and worth thousands of dollars. Even 5FS is only 1-in-150 of the mint state population.

I am interested to see if people conclude this is a proof or circulation coin. Looks like two experts are already saying proof. That was my first thought when seeing the depth of strike and the smoothness of the fields, but I am terrible at diagnosing pre-San Francisco proof nickels.

Edit: NGC accredits both 5FS and 6FS apparently: https://www.ngccoin.com/news/articl...eps-nickels/

Not FS, the bottom step is mushy along the center. Can't say for sure if this is a proof or business strike but leaning towards business strike.

I'm going with proof also. maybe PF63. proofs do not have step designations. if it is a business strike then it would qualify for 5FS not 6 but I don't think it is

I thought for sure that the details on Monticello would be deep and clear on a proof, but it seems I was wrong. The doors appear particularly shallow on 1960s era proof nickels.
