I came across this gorgeous coin on ebay. It's an 1825 George IV farthing graded MS-63 "Red" by NGC. I don't ever recall seeing a nearly two century old bronze/copper coin graded as "Red" by one of the TPG. I made an offer on the coin and the seller accepted. I had it within two days. It is a gorgeous red with a hit of blue toning above Britannia's head, but it did receive the "Red" designation. It now proudly resides in my British coin collection and I'm happy to share it with others. Paul Bulgerin

Wow! That is a real beauty! Gives me hope that one day I'll find a Victoria copper that shines as nicely as your George!!! Congrats!

Interesting coin, nice quality. I noted it also has the 5 of the date very clearly repunched over a 5 placed to high! This and other varieties can be found here: http://www.farthingshalfpennyerrors...o/george-iv/I include a picture of the date area of your coin together with that of a "normal" date. My congratulations with obtaining this nice and interesting coin!

Wonderful acquisition, Paul! It would be interesting to know how this coin was stored over the past 200 years - it's amazing how it's retained its original lustre!

Eligius,
Thanks for pointing out the 5 over 5 in the date. I hadn't noticed that. I was too busy admiring the red color and luster.

Here's another photo of the obverse, under slightly different lighting, which does a nice job of showing off the mint red on this coin.

I much prefer full red than a nice, even patina, although I am still perfectly happy to have any coin in an uncirculated grade, nice patina or otherwise. This coin:-

Lovely coin, Paul. Super colour and lustre. I'd like to have caught this one. There are several 5 over 5 varieties with the 1825, and this one is the 5 over much higher 5. I had these down as being quite scarce, but I've managed to pick up several reasonable quality ones over the last year. This is the best one I have of the overstrike. It's graded by PCGS as MS 63RB, but there is an obnoxious little lump of debris (doesn't look like verd under a high powered loupe, even though it's greenish in colour), and there is a dark patch above the bust. I'll likely as not crack it out of the slab and resubmit to NGC. Maybe.

My 1825 is nothing like as good as that! My best in that era is this 1827:
