Hi All,

I have a few coins with countermarks on it and was wondering if there is any good reference work regarding countermarks on coins? Sometimes I see Stack and Bowers, heritage and others having coins with countermarks. But especially the non common ones I am curious about.

Here a small rays? countermark on a early 6 pence. In the portret. It seems different then bankermarks.

Thank you! I did not know about this one. Does anyone here has this book and could tell me if marks like the one I have on this coin are in it aswell. I think about getting this book as there is not much to find about marks it seems.

Counter marks that are officially applied by a Mint for the re valuation of a coinage issue are relatively scarce, across the whole of numismatic history; such coins due the scarcity of this type of issue, are always historically and numismatically interesting, and some quite valuable.

Bankers's marks to test the purity of the metal are more common, throughout numismatic history.

Privately applied post Mint counter marked coins are far more common, and in lots of cases, can be considered a form of deliberate coin damage, but not in all cases. Some of these privately applied counter marks may have a legitimate and significant part in the history of the country or culture that issued them.

Coin pictured appears to have a banker's counter mark.
