Hi all,

New here and fairly new to coin collecting. While sorting tonight, I came across this. I can find nothing about it online and don't even know if it's possible for this to happen during minting. It is on the reverse, Quarter Dollar wording.

I've looked at the quarter in 200 different ways/angles...I'm showing 3 here - honestly, it looks like that R is straight onto the edge w/o breaks... as if it were done during minting. I've also been looking at a tons of other coins this week and can generally tell for certain if it would be damage caused by someone, but not in this case.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!!

@amy, first welcome to CCF. Second, that is a bit unusual. I don't see how this could have happened during minting. Rather I'm thinking that someone "chased" the metal from the rim to form this extra long leg on the letter R.

Looks like a hit from circulation to me.

Yes, a hit was done at the end of the R pushing metal to the rim.

I agree with john1, it is a contact mark and did not happen before it left the mint.
