Despite
ebay hype, die chips are what I call "expected errors" vs. "unexpected errors" like a doubled die.
Die chips are common and happen to dies as they get used and deteriorate from the extreme pressures they are subjected to. The mint knows there WILL be die chips that occur (and also die cracks) b/c the laws of physics are inescapable.
A doubled die is an unexpected happening in the die making process where the die receives an accidental doubled image due to a mechanical failure (nowadays it could be described as hub slippage) when the die is being made. This is never expected and totally accidental. That is the kind of error the actual coin hobby values.
There are actually more non-collectable and mislabeled "L@@K RARE ERROR COIN! L@@K" auctions listed on
ebay than the total number of actual error coins sold by Heritage in the past 2 decades!
