Hi gang, I got this dime in my change today. Aside from the pretty clear Denver mintmark, I don't think it'll ever be possible to identify a date, although the copper in the middle places it after 1964. Aside from that, it just "feels" like an older coin, like from the 70's, maybe?

At first I thought the heavy wear might have just been from a well-circulated lifetime. While I think it's safe to say this dime has seen a lot of pockets, registers, washer/dryers, etc... with some magnification, I'm thinking a lot of the "damage" seems less like damage and more like it was at least partially "born like this" - maybe a planchette error(?)

But that's my admittedly very newbie take. Any light the knowledgeable, experienced folks in the community can shed would be good light and very welcome. Thanks!

I thought about the dryer dime possibility also. I just matched it's weight (2.1g) against a few other dimes ranging from 2004, 2005, 2021,1990 (all weighed in at 2.2 g) and 1982d (2.3g). After washing the family clothes for the past 20 years or so, I've seen my share of dryer dimes and pennies and they seem to physically shrink a bit (when they were little, my daughters used to call it "baby money" and they'd play with them with their dolls) after comparing weights, I laid the dime on top of the 2021 and the 1982, and I can't see the edges of either coin underneath, except in those edges where it was either malformed from the start, or dinged sometime in it's travels.

But... having just read the linked "dryer dime post" (thank you Errers and Varietys), I can see that "dryer damage" comes in a lot of shapes and appearances. I'm still happy to hear from someone who'll tell me, "Dude! You just scored your entire retirement this morning!", but for the moment I'll hold off starting that email to my bosses, telling them everything I always wanted to say... ;)

Certainly mechanical damage of some sort.

Not a Dryer Coin.

Without a doubt, PMD.
