I received this coin in a while back and never posted any pictures. It does have a small rim hit on the reverse around 7, but I'm very pleased at the price I paid. I'm thinking AU53/55. All I've done with it is to give it a soak in Verdicare, otherwise I've left it alone. Thoughts on the coin in-hand?

Looks like a little fresh copper around the ear and hair.

Yeah, I thought so too. Still not unhappy at $55.

I'd say AU-55. Hard to say whether the photo lighting is making it look previously cleaned.

looking closer at the new photos of the obv I'm seeing what could be signs of a cleaning where whatever was used was not washed off completely. all around the front of the profile there is a dividing line that appears to have been a liquid leaving residual. haloing around stars is another indicator. is it enough to detail the coin? not sure

I see some light rub at ear and hair curl and lighter copper. I think cleaned, but not aggressively. Question is this would grade straight - doubtful to me and a gamble. Not worth it as an AU Details coin. Nice if it would grade straight. Still OK with the purchase; I believe $55 was very fair.

I'm reposting an update on this coin. I also thought it showed signs of obverse cleaning and decided to experiment with it a bit to see if I could gently reverse that issue. I've used a couple of very gentle and slow techniques and I'm curious as to the reaction on the coin's appearance so far. Very gradual change over several months. Paid not a lot for this and thought it was a good candidate for some experimentation. What say you all?

Glad you think the results are good on this one - I was very pleased. Took five months to get this result. Kind of a long story. Worked pretty well on this coin, but poorly on another one (basically no improvement). Hate to put it out there as I don't want people to try this and possibly have poor results or even damage a coin - I'm still testing. Let me continue the experiments and, if I have consistent results, I'll share what I'm doing. It's very gentle and completely organic - zero chemicals.

Well whatever you are doing it does seem to improve the look of the coin.

I'm thinking it might grade straight now. Results on other coins not as good, but the coins aren't being damaged, just not showing improvement like this one.
