Hello everyone, (See better pics in reply) I do not handle many (any?) collectible, ie non face value, notes in Rome. I've bought dollars for euro but haven't bought any notes of collectible interest. Surprisingly, I see a fair number of obsolete notes (usually damaged and over priced) and $2 bills priced at €5-10; silver certificates at €5, etc. But this $50 gold note is for sale by a private collector. I haven't handled this note. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Edited by Roma2021 11/01/2023 7:32 pm

That's a nice expensive note. It's been pressed looking at the minimized folds. But it still has vibrant color. I would say VF 25, although I believe it's real something about Grant looks soft which could be a sign of counterfeit. I honestly don't own one (but would like to) so I'm basing my comments on the ones I've seen.
This note is expensive enough that I would buy it only after it's graded and confirmed genuine. At VF25 and a good price I would be happy to own this note.

Agree, 4-fold lower VF-25, genuine.

Roma, it looks good except that I'm not seeing the colored threads in the paper. This could be due to lighting or the photograph, but if you have it in hand you should see them.

Examine this 1928 $50 Gold Certificate at the highest resolution. It most certainly is printed on "paper" with security threads. I just checked some of my notes from 1928, 1929, and 1935. All have colored threads woven into the fabric. https://americanhistory.si.edu/coll...nmah_1839954My 1928 Federal Reserve Note (redeemable in gold). Scanned, with light bleeding through to cause ghosting. Tell me again how small size notes do not have security threads, please.

These security threads are not typically visible to the eye on small notes, and certainly would not be in the scan of the $50 note in question. Do you question its authenticity?

Coinfrog, I see that you deleted your post stating that small sized notes do not have security threads. But hfjacinto hasn't deleted his where he agreed with you: Quote: Yep, early small sized had no security threads. I checked my uncirculated notes from 1928, 1929, and 1935 (12 in all). On every one the security threads are quite visible to the naked eye. I then examined circulated examples from these years (20). Visibility of the threads decreases proportionally to the degree of wear on the notes. As such, they may not be obvious on the note Roma is contemplating.

This Fr.2404 should have security threads imbedded in the paper. As Hondo mentions, seeing the threads on a worn note can be challenging.

If you zoom in on the front and back pictures you can see the threads. The note looks VF25

Thank you everyone.
The seller is asking €600. I may make an offer, but I feel a little out of my depth on this one and will wait to hear more from forum members.
It feels like the type of item that needs graded. Is that feeling leaning toward correct?

I misrepresented what I was going to say and didn't edit my post. I went back and checked my early notes and on circulated notes the security threads are barely visible. So there are security threads but they would be barely visible on this note. On a picture they become impossible to see. So the security threads would be hard to impossible to see on this note.

€600 is a fair price but like I said it's not a cheap note. I would feel better if it's graded.
