Most ebay photos of proof coins are pretty bad for trying to pick doubled dies, but on a lark thought maybe I'd get lucky and score one of the 1970-S proof varieties. There is a seller of really nice toned coins who uses nice images so started there. And bingo! It's not a doubled die visible in the PCGS Trueview images, but a superb-looking coin saying "large date" right on the label. But it's not, it's a small date. A quick check showed that a PR68RB coin would be TOP POP 1/0. Well bought it right off with plans to send it in to get reholdered correctly. As for the doubled die, this coin is actually a fairly late die stage and was easy to miss even with the scope. But got the light just right and it jumped out. Strongest on LIBERTY, so showing an image of that, but also very light separation lines visible on the date and TRUST. 1970-S Lincoln Memorial cent doubled die - DDO-012 (small date) Edited by tropicalbats 11/02/2023 4:53 pm

I'm speechless. Thanks, Doug. When I stopped to think a bit more. The mislabel adds a bit of intrigue.

That is a very nice snag, all the way around! The toner is an additional bonus, at least in my opinion.

Thanks all! Not something I'm usually looking for but well there it was in all its glory. They say buy the coin, not the slab, and well I guess in this case that is certainly true.

You did get the light just right. That separation is easy to see.
Congrats.

Updated slab pic. Now POP 1/0 but for some reason they didn't use the coin as a plate coin on coinfacts. There are in fact no plate coins for 1970-S proof small date RB at all. Ah well, it's even better-looking in hand so all good.

Man, how is PCGS so terrible at their only job - identifying the relevant information about a coin and putting it in a labeled holder? Congrats on the great cherrypick, but man, it just makes me angry that this was messed up in the first place. They should really have to re-slab any coins that are shown to be misidentified on their label free of cost.
