Not my coin and I'm not interested in it, but it made me curious what the value might be for a rare coin in really horrible condition. Graded PCGS VF Details Tooled. How much would you pay?

A 1947 curved 7 Maple Leaf is listed as $3,500.00 in VF-20 condition at Coinsandcanada.com. I see a lot of tarnish and many scratches, especially on the obverse. I suspect the tooling is seen just below the king's jaw.

I do collect Canadian fifty cent pieces and have the 1947 straight 7, Curved 7, 7/7 straight 7 and the straight 7 Maple Leaf, but this variety is beyond my purchasing power. I suspect in the $2000.00 plus range.

Not my series, but I would say $1000 to $1500.

Part of my curiosity is that the coin is included as part of a lot. What's the seller strategy? What's a buyer strategy going to be? Does a buyer want this one and not the others, or want the others and not this one? It will be difficult to tell the value of this coin after the sale.

The lot sold tonight for US$2640. What I didn't mention is that the lot also had another 1947 50c CR ML graded VF30, and a 1945 5c UNC Details. It seemed odd to put two of the same rare coin in the same lot, even though one is in horrible condition. And why add in a Details nickel worth maybe $10 even in straight grade? It doesn't make sense.

I collect 50 cent pieces but not in super high grades. My '47 Maple Leaf straight is AU 58 ICCS and the '48 is EF 40 ICCS. I am not too much into varieties. I don't know what the coin in question is really worth, but the look would detract from my collection and I can think of other coins I would rather spend $1000 to $2000 on.
