So I found this 1922 Peace dollar now I'm wondering if there are any known business strikes made from the Low Relief Matte proof dies. I'm going to try and be as realistic as possible here. Chances are it's probably not proof seems to be a later stage of the die pairing. What would be the best way to go about getting it verified further. I am looking to eventually get it stabbed by pcgs but haven't fully looked into it, kinda assuming it would cost me a pretty penny if it is what I think it is and I'd rather not waist money. I'm kinda feeling like the dog that chases cars and finally caught one and now I don't know what to do with it. Your input is appreciated. Otherwise I'm going to go to my local coin show this weekend and see if someone there who knows more info about it. I already checked VAM world and this is not listed as a VAM. And I have also checked against various die markers visible by photo on pcgs. I'm 99% sure this coin was struck by Matte Proof dies I'm just skeptical of it being proof. I also went down to my local coin shop earlier today and had them test it on their sigma. My scale broke I had them weigh and check it and it checks out as a legit Peace dollar now I need to verify the die pairing.
Here is a link to pcgs for ease of checking the variety-

Reverse is b1 type with correct features matching matte proof die and not typical b1 reverse

If photos of another area are needed let me know and I will post them. I will also post more info as things happen such as grading as well as what the people at my local coin show let me know this weekend.

I'm a bit confused by all the detail photos. Which are your coin versus on-line examples? Perhaps you can label them accordingly.

However - best of wishes as you seek verification on what you have. I await further updates.

I would suggest sending it to John (messydesk) on VAMWorld, he is the site administrator. He has a slabbing service where he attributes your coin and places it in a removable slab, very inexpensive too. If you still wish to send to one of the top TPG's, send his paperwork with it.

I have used his services a number of times...great guy! He can even include it for grading to PCGS in a bulk submission at a very resonable price...it might take awhile because he waits till he has a hundred to submit...but for the price...the wait is worth it imho...
Good luck and follow-up with what you decide.
Nice coin!

All photos posted here are of the same coin which I bought for cheap. My question is did the Low Relief Matte proof dies get used for business strikes?( I only ASSUME they did but I haven't found anything stating the dies were absolutely also used for business strikes) Or were the dies retired after striking the matte proofs? Would it just be better to pay the grading sub and risk loosing my sub fees for a chance at it being proof? If it comes back business I know I can still get it attributed as "Struck with matte proof dies" and I'm pretty sure I'd still be able to sell it for more than what I'd be into it cost wise. Even if I need to get it re slabbed with a VAM attribution number later on I'd at least know it for sure isn't proof. At this point I'm kinda leaning towards just taking the risk and sending it out to PCGS. I'm pretty sure I can recoup my costs regardless of an unnecessary sub fee. Your opinions and more info are greatly appreciated. Also thanks for the info on who to contact for VAM attribution. I'll probably be needing that later on knowing my luck. If it was an earlier die stage I would have already just submitted it. I know the odds are not in my favor; however I haven't found anything so far to state it isn't possible I found a circulated proof. I'll try and post up some better full coin photos tonight. But please share your thoughts should I just take the risk and loose a little if it comes back as business. I still would have options to recoup cost.

OK I changed my mind I'm probably going to pursue the VAM option... and now I'm just confused more so. My b2 appears to be struck better than this coin. Not that that matters however now I've got some stuff to think about.
