Hello everyone :) I picked up a 1886 Morgan dollar. What do you guys/gals think, is this a VAM-1A1 and is there any point to send for grading? Thanks. This is my first post on this amazing forum.

to CCF! Not a 1A1, but could you post a photo of the reverse? It doesn't look like it would warrant grading.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome everyone, it is great to finally post here :) @Zurie: Oh, that is such a shame. I was thinking that because of the angled line at the neck it was some die clash or some other variety and hence paid a lot of money at an auction. Was checking the VAM website and it looked very similar to VAM 1A1. Is there any chance there could be something else special about the coin? Since I am very new to coin collecting then I would not even know what is the rough grade of the coin. But if you say it is not worth sending for grading then I trust you an will save the money. I have added some pictures of the obverse. Maybe there is something special there? Big thanks again to all of you

Thanks for the pics of the reverse. It definitely has clash marks on both the obverse and reverse, but the location of the clash at the neck and the date position don't match VAM-1A1. I was unable to nail down the exact die pair. Gradewise, it looks like it has mid-AU sharpness but without much luster, so the value wouldn't justify grading it.

Thanks again for your reply Zurie, appreciated. I was also thinking maybe it is VAM-3A, it looks quite similar from the pictures I see on the VAMWorld website. What do you think?

Check the other markers for 1M. In the full coin shot, the clash mark looks really close to yours, the slight difference may be where you took your pics at an angle. The date location looks really close too. LINK http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c...886-P_VAM-1M

Thanks for the reply makecents. I checked it out and could not find any other similarities except the clashed line below neck. Maybe it is a new undiscovered VAM Or at least I am trying to find justification for spending so much money on this coin

Clashes are very common on Morgan dollars. There are many clashed varieties that don't have VAM numbers associated. I glanced at your photos and saw nothing of note, at least for the highly-desirable varieties. If it's any consolation, I was doing the same thing years ago - jumping at a coin because I saw evidence of clashed dies - until I eventually realized that they are commonly found. But, keep looking at the coin in-hand and you may see something that we can't. Edit: Go to this webpage if you haven't already and make note of the map showing where desirable clashes / letter transfers are expected: http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.c...ribution_101

Thank you Bump111, I will need to do some more research that's for sure. But it's an exciting hobby and I am glad I found this forum. Have a nice day
