Hello all,
About 6 months ago I started doing research to try and learn more about coins (pennies in particular) and the errors that pertain to certain years and what to look for. I am still pretty new to the hobby and have a hard time determining legit errors or just a simple malfunction of the machine and not having anything special. I had a 5 gallon water jug full with just pennies and decided to go through them separating first by location of mint and then by year. I have gone through about 95% of the pennies and have a small bag of what I believe are (hopefully) decent errors. I came across a 1988 Philadelphia mint penny last night that I would say is probably the best error I've found yet. I would greatly appreciate your feedback about the error. Thank you
-Rob

This looks like glue to me. Let's see what the others have to say.

With the mechanical damage present, it looks a bit more like a vise job to me, but it certainly could be an impression of another cent in glue. Either way, this is not a mint error.

Also, welcome to CCF @new.

For fun, give the coin a long soak in 100% acetone. Could reduce or eliminate the substance.

Newerrorwhodis,

I agree that coin is glue. In future posts please do not post photos of your scopes' screen, use a memory card in the scope...thanks.
Also, please crop photos a bit better. Not a big deal, but thiat is a cent not a penny. There is a difference between an error and a variety. Here is a link you might want to bookmark and study: http://www.error-ref.com/

Definitely glue, you can see right through it. Soak it in acetone and it will go away.

I see a rim flattened from damage, not a Cud.

to the CCF With the damage on the obverse, it looks like both a vise job and glue on the reverse.
