Hi everyone,
I have a collection of silver coins that I'm interested in trading or selling. These coins are primarily in good or fine condition. My goal is to upgrade my collection by either exchanging these coins for superior specimens or selling them to acquire better examples.
Would anyone have suggestions on the best approach for this? If it helps, I am in Calgary.
Thanks in advance. Edited by Bose357 11/19/2023 6:27 pm

Considering the size of the city, there are not a lot of good options for coin dealers. I used to drop by Calgary Coin semi-regularly but as far as I know Robert shut it down last summer. I haven't found another shop there that is similar to Calgary Coin in having a large inventory and always having new stock available. Sorry don't have a good suggestion other than maybe trying to find a good Facebook group or something like that to sell individually. Most coin shops will give you a deeply discounted amount for a collection as they know they will have some of the coins for years.

I think Calgary Coin is still open, but only on the weekends. I recall seeing Robert at the CNS coin show in September!

I've been to Albern, but was underwhelmed with both their interest and their selection. Almost felt more like they wanted to deal with bullion than coins. It's been a few years though so I should go back in and give it another try.
Glad to hear Robert is still working from the storefront. When I was in there early this year he was talking about shutting it down in July, so I haven't gone back in. I'll have to go check him out on a Saturday. He's an interesting fellow but I like him and I've bought a bunch from him over the years. :)

Albern is associated with Gatewest. I've sold some bullion to them in the past and was satisfied with what they paid. They don't really have much to buy there though. I'd shop around and sell what you have, then focus on what you want to buy. It's probably better than trying to find someone that will do a trade.

You haven't discussed dates, but if these are post-1937 they are really only worth melt value with a few exceptions. You can probably sell them to J&M in Vancouver if you can't find a local buyer. Another option is to sell on ebay. Bulk silver will sell well although there are fees of course. It is some work, but you can probably get a lot more than you would from a dealer by selling off the better items on line. Don't try to get top dollar on ebay....your items will never sell.

Bose you have your PM's shut off, but if you want to message me I'd be willing to help you figure out some options depending on what you have. I'm not a buyer at all as my main area of interest is very high grade coins, not circulated coins at all. I own a house in Calgary and live there part time for now and by next year full time. I'm happy to help if there is some interest.

I have been happy dealing with Albern Coins when I am selling silver coins in poor condition that are only worth melt value.
