Not sure if this is common or not. Variety Vista does not show a trumpet tail for the 1945S in the mint mark styles list. http://varietyvista.com/06%20Mercur...20Styles.htm

Anyone familiar with this one?

Well, that is certainly interesting! The trumpet tail mint mark was definitely in use for 1945 on cents and quarters. Nickels were still on the giant War Nickel mark. I found these similar mint marks on the PCGS mint state listings:

Thanks Brandmeister, apparently common. Not sure why it isn't shown on variety vista for this date.

There was a lot of mint mark confusion at San Francisco around WWII, and again from 1951-1953. There are a few oddities that I've noticed looking at PCGS listings that seem to contradict the Variety Vista pages, but those are few and far between (and could also be rookie errors on my part).
