Any idea what is going on? Appears there is no copper coating.

My opinion is it's some sort of environmental toning. The T and the Y on Liberty appear to show a bit of the coins original copper toning. What is the weight of the coin?

I agree with environmental damage. Weight for a copper plated cent is 2.5 grams +/- .10 grams mint tolerance. Copper cent is 3.1 grams +/- .10 grams.

Rather than toning of the originally-applied copper plating, I think that this layer has been stripped away, leaving behind the zinc core.

@bsi, it is fine for this thread, but in the future please always post overall images of the front and back of coins as there may be something of interest that we notice. Thx.

This isn't weathered the mint has non copper plated zinc planchets that get mixed in and boom u have a penny thats not plated they turn black over time

Please note the copper color on field in front of Lincoln bust. IMHO, it's environmental staining and/or normal wear.
