I once again seek your collective learned opinions (and off-the-cuff guesses) of the grade of this coin. I am still struggling with learning to grade, and would appreciate your reasoning in addition to the assigned number. The reasoning helps a lot in the learning process. I think the obverse is a VF35 and the reverse an XF 45. How Close AM I on this? Thanks in advance.

I think it is a nice XF-45 overall, if not a little better. Doesn't have any obvious cleaning, either.

I'm going to go just a little higher and say AU-50.

WOW! Looks like full AU to me too. Decent strike. Aren't these often weakly struck?

They are often weakly struck, particularly around the shield and the LIBERTY. The reason I was thinking it may be graded lower is because of the wear around the hair and the flatness of the flag and fingers holding it. On the reverse, there appears to be a bit more rub on the breast feathers than would be expected on an AU coin, although the eagle's head looks pretty sharp.

The first time I saw a seated liberty, I thought it was a flag too. Its actually a cap.

It is not just a cap, it is a Phrygian cap- everything on a coin(the classics anyway) has meaning

BTW, that is an awesome AU50 75CC

AU-50 ! Really nice double-dime! I believe that LIBERTY on the Twenty Cent Piece is raised versus incuse like the remainder of the Seated Liberty Series, which makes it really susceptive to wear.

success,

Yes, the Phrygian cap is a Roman symbol of liberty. Makes sense. Thanks for the info. Now I have to wonder what the sandals represent. I wear them often myself since I live in the sub-tropics.

Sigh. Outbid on another one. And a nice one it is. Somebody always seems to have deeper pockets than me (like a major portion of the US population, including man, woman and child). So the hunt continues. Thanks for the input, and please stay tuned......
