Maybe this question has been asked and answered -- if so, just point me to the topic. Which year or years did the U.S. mint the most different types of coins? I'm not including commemoratives here, just standard issue -- but you can include proof types. And different types of the same denom (like 3¢ silver & nickel).

1873 introduced the Trade dollar, plus open and closed 3 and with and without arrows varieties.

If you are asking struck for circulation and not limited to those within the United States, then the early 1900's top the list. The U.S. Philippines (1903), Panama (1904),Cuba (1915) and the U.S.

@Ballyhoo - I was asking about U.S. issues, but now you have me curious. Did the Philippines or Cuba really have 15 or more different types in a single year?

I think Ballyhoo is talking about coins minted in the US but including minted for other countries.

I saw that those random blind certified coin packs have a 1873 proof set as one of the prizes. I'm not paying over $1000 on a lottery ticket but it would be pretty cool to win.

I put together a graded 1973 set and one from exactly 100 years before that would round out the collection nicely.

I was actually asking about denominations, so mint marks and arrows don't really fall into the equation. But different denomination *types* like the Trade dollar and the silver vs. nickel 3¢ pieces should be included, so I think 1873 still earns the top spot, with 17 types.

Let's get a visual on all of these...
