1935-S-Buffalo-Nickel-With-Poofy-Letters:-DDD,-DDR,-Circulation-Flattening?
Was checking out this coin listing. Seller's pic. Are the poofy letters caused by Die Deterioration? I note that the dot between United States also seems a little vertically distorted. Given that even Five Cents is plump, I am thinking DDD over the whole die face. However, before I just zip past that one, I thought I'd ask the pros.

The elongated dot apparently suggests a DDR, although the pics aren't clear enough to see much else. Here's a thread that discusses that on a different dated Buff.

Yeah, this particular seller has tons of coins, and all the pics are terrible quality.

What concerned me is the fade on the rim, suggesting circulation flattening. Also, the coin looks harshly cleaned with something. It would make me more confident in a DDR if I could see the S in better detail, because if that is poofy too, then it's probably DDD.

Pics too soft to evaluate with any certainty.

Need some good closeups to help figure out if you have a match to any of the three known DDRs:

No images forthcoming, Spence.

I did check VV. The PLUribus does not have the characteristic bottom tabs of the FS-801 (001). Nor does it have the top doubling on PL of 003. I can barely make out the 002 entry, and there is no way to tell with this pic, it's so out of focus on the bottom.

There were no buffs made in SF for 1932-1934. There is a 1931-S DDR that has some similarities, but that seems like a super long time to wait to re-use a reverse.

We'll see what this auction does as it approaches close. If it's a few bucks (or doesn't sell) then maybe I will roll the dice.

For what it's worth, here is the seller's obverse pic. The coin has seen wear, although the obverse does not seem poofy like the reverse. That's it for pics, unfortunately.

Hard to tell with seller pictures. Could be Die Deterioration.

Well, I offered the seller $3 for the coin, but he ignored the offer and relisted the nickel in a new auction. I'm not going to chase it because I think DDD is probably the right conclusion.

The Buffalo nickel dies wore quickly and were used extensively. It isn't unusual to see the devices spread over the life of the die. Many of my circulated nickels exhibit enlarging of the letters. That being said, I'm not an expert on Buffalo DDs so you may well have something.
