Was sorting some cents and noticed that this 1944 looked weird in the fields -- specifically it had luster more to the resemblance of a proof coin rather than a BS. So I took a closer look and noticed this weird sort of mark that is raised bits that definitely have some sort of pattern to them, but are quite hard to see unless angled correctly.

Pics below -- weight is 3.01, non-magnetic

Hi, HolyHackJack! First, that's a really nice looking LWC you have, but it's definitely not a proof. Second, when you see something raised on a coin that shouldn't be there, it's usually due to a die chip or gouge in the die. I'm thinking gouge here. And as old and tired as that die was, there certainly was time for that to happen.

I will answer you easy to understand.

1. From 1942 till 1950 no proof cent was struck.
2. Old die before retaired and over polish with the polishing marks.
3. Rised seem to be some Die chips very minor.
4. Nice coins for the age and preserve the nice color of the original bronze color.

Sorry for the confusion -- didn't think it was a proof, but it was just the way the luster and surface were done that caught my eye and made me look closer. Some comparisons below to what I had and a few pictures with my attempt at color correction to hilight what is either my eyes wanting to see shapes or.... I still don't know what. I'm not thinking this is anything super significant and I'm not hoping to turn this 1c into $10,000 -- I've just never seen anything like it before. Hard to capture on photo from a microscope with manual focus, but it's definitely noticeable in a loup.

Nah - there have been some ones I've cracked out in the past and I just kept the inner ring portion. For anything I'm looking at under a microscope or don't have a decided place for it, I throw them in there just in case I accidentally drop them or something.

I've also discovered that it's chemically resistant to things like acetone and other solvents, so you can take care of that while keeping it from scraping around at the bottom or whatever container you're using.

It looks like a steele cent. Try a magnet to attract it.
