Did Engelhard make gold? ...

Do you have a pic? And better yet, why not create your own thread?

And to the forums!

I will try and get a photo on here soon but the round I have is engelhard and has the prospector image on it. dated 1982 has U.S.A. and says The American Gold Prospector on one side of it, On the other Engelhard 24 Karat is over the Engelhard logo and below it 999.9 pure and half troy ounce fine gold

I would love to see a picture of this coin, I have only one of the Engelhard rounds, the American Prospector-1985 in 1 Troy ounce Silver and I think these are very nicely designed pieces, please share the Gold Round picture with us all, thanks, Mike

Engelhard made 1/10 oz and 1 ounce rounds. I'm not sure if they made 1/2oz rounds or not

I got a few "reworked" Englehard Prospectors on ebay a few years ago. They had been "altered" by someone carefully removing the "silver" word and then overlaying the coin nicely with gold...trying to pass these off as gold bullion I guess.

I got them at less than the silver spot price at the time.

Did some online research and could find nothing about Prospetors in gold vs silver.

Took them into a local small coin shop and after the guy looked at them he freaked out, quickly backed up and acted like I brought in a mayo jar full of anthrax. I only asked him for any details or ID help as I'm no coin expert. He said he wouldn't touch them with a 10 pole and stood well away from me, as I left with his eyes bugging out.

Guess I'll toss these in the lake...but wait....isn't there some 99.9% silver under that thin gold veneer? and that's worth something, huh?

Thanks

Englehard did make gold rounds and bars until they stopped to make silver. That is why the prospector is still on the silver rounds.

maybe I better drop by a different coin shop.?

Now I have to go find where I stashed them around here.

(but it does appear that some sort of "reworking" was done to these coins by someone...and they are clearly "Prospectors" as I have a few of the regular silver ones in excellent shape to compare to.)

Thanks for the info, sir.

At one time I had a couple of the 1984 1 oz. prospectors that had the word "silver" ground off then gold plated. You could tell where the word silver had been. I sold them few months back when silver was high.

Depending on the year, it is entirely possible that someone goofed with them but originally Englehard did nothing but gold. They only started doing silver in the late 80's.I don't believe that they even do gold anymore. The crazy thing was that they kept the prospector on the products as we all know, you don't pan silver.Hahaha
