I have a 1944 steel penny but not to sure if I have an authentic penny. I am not an expert in coins but would love to hear any knowledgable persons opinion. I will upload images of the coin. Feedback is appreciated!

Hi, Well I would send it off for authentication. Then sell it and buy a house. Where in the world did you find it, Let me know, Frank B.

Hi, I hope it is a true 1944 steel cent. Do not get your hopes up. I could be wrong but the pit marks and date raises a red flag. Keep in mind I am only looking at pix. Having the coin in hand makes all the difference. I will keep my fingers crossed. Frank B.

Fake. The shape of the 9 is wrong, and both 4's are slightly too small, tilted, and not close enough to each another. Google "1944 cent - images" and compare to dozens of examples.

really have to agree with "NOT Authentic". The date lettering is off. ..and would be curious about the overpolished die areas on Lincoln.

I agree--doesn't appear legit for the reasons noted.

yes a fake - the 'hook of the 9 should not be pointing straight down but curled in some, and the last 4 is far too small. But the die sure was heavily polished - another marker that it is not real.

The end of his nose is floating in the air. I tend to agree that this is a counterfeit.

Sometimes, genuine, but common 1944 US pennies are faked with thin electro plated with zinc, (very easy to do), but these coins won't stick to a magnet. The same blank planchets were struck by the US Mint for the 1944 Belgian Two Cent coin. 1944 electro plated (fake) US pennies, 1943 US zinc coated steel pennies and 1944 zinc plated Belgian Two Cents coins are all common. The unstruck zinc coated steel planchets are scarce, but can be found occasionally in LCS and sold by delaers who know about them

Looks like a rare speared Lincoln Chinese forgery.
