Wonder if this defacing, X-ing out, was done by someone who lost a loved one during the Indian wars? I'm hard-pressed to see another motivation for this damage.

I've seen so many coins with X carved into one side or both that I've also wondered what the motivation was. Probably a variety of reasons? Checking if it's counterfeit, marking it as counterfeit, seeing if it comes back in circulation, proving how sharp your knife is, bored, expressing dislike for something the coin represents? My contemporary counterfeit 1861 10c has an X through the denomination. I've seen a seemingly inordinate number of Canadian Victoria coins with an X through the portrait.
