The title says it all. What is a standalone pre-1965 proof dime worth? I have seen them various places for a buck or two above melt ($2.50-3.50). Probably left over from someone breaking mint sets for the 1964 Kennedy halves. Is that a good buy, terrible buy, average buy?

Brandmeister, long ago I acquired a single proof 1963 Roosevelt dime for inclusion in my type set (now in a Dansco 7070). But if you're not you're assembling a set, I'm not sure why someone would want these as opposed to stackers for the money. There doesn't seem to be great demand for them.

Maybe $3 each if you tried to sell them individually, but in bulk I believe they'd just be treated as junk silver.

I don't have a silver proof dime, so I was going to add one to an existing order. But I am always on the lookout for unappreciated value. I struck me as odd that the coin stores were selling the proof dimes for the same price as ordinary silver dimes.

I went through the same kind of investigation the other day on the 1945 Micro-S dimes. Turns out that for an official CPG number, they aren't really that rare, and therefore aren't much more valuable than an ordinary 1945-S. Same with the 1979 SBA Near Date (Wide Rim) $1.

1961-1964 the proof mintages exceeded 3 million every year, so I can see why they don't have much value.

The melt value is .0723 x the silver spot price. Less if the coin is very worn.
