Three things jumped out to me. The Half Cent central design appears to be in much higher relief than the large cent peripheral design, yet appears to have much less wear. The counterstamp appears to be a fairly fresh punch, especially the last letter. And it's hard to believe the coin could have been both holed and counterstamped without somebody wondering what they were seeing in their hands. This one seems too much like the old adage, "If it's too good to be true . . ."

It looks like the Half Cent die was punched over a Large cent obverse. What does the other side look like?

I sent Jack Young (one of the authors of the article) this link and since he is a CCF member, hoping he might be able to provide some better and more images for us.

I didn't know I was referenced in the article until today...

I was asked if there are counterfeit Half Cents known and I have one (an 1849); patina of this one is similar to other current CN fakes.

I own a counterfeit 1808 Half Cent with a counterfeit counter-mark in my collection for reference.

Interesting they only show 1 image in the article; images as follows:

To clear the air, this is what the article states:

"Consensus is counterfeit," Grellman said in a May 5 email to Coin World. He wrote, "Cent genuine but Half Cent stamp counterfeit," indicating an underlying genuine cent coin was used as host for a counterfeit overstriking of a Half Cent.

Thanks Jack! This is indeed an interesting piece, but also the Half Cent parts are counterfeit in my opinion as well. Appreciate the extra images too!!!
