I'll be getting one, but I'm having a hard time accepting the $80 cost with unlimited mintage and silver at $23/oz. I love collecting ASEs, to me they are beautiful and I'm hooked on all the varieties but I think the Mint needs to limit production to bring more value.

that's a great point. I'm in the same boat. almost 400% markup is outrageous - but I'm completing a set :(

This is really the Achilles Heel of coin collecting, which seems mostly a problem for modern coin collectors. Sometimes it's an internal struggle we deal with when we both stack and collect. Other times it seems like ridicule from the stackers directed at the collectors. Especially with the ASEs. Stackers just think a collector is out of his head to pay that much to add another ASE to their collection. No way would they pay that much for an ounce of silver for their stack. But we're not adding to a stack, we're adding to our collection or set. It seems the stackers-only will never understand the collectors mentality.

My subscriptions are for six "W" proofs and six "S" proofs so that's what I'm going with. The American Silver Eagle is at the center of my silver coin collection and it will always come first before anything else.

But what if you're a stacker AND a collector!!! I think that's where most of us are at.

Quote: Let's talk about That. You are an Inspiration to " Collectors " Thank you very much for your kind words, morgans dad, they are appreciated. The American Silver Eagle in various forms make up 25% of my silver coin collection and I will continue to buy them each year. I'm a collector, not a stacker, but the ASE is such a popular coin that it will always be a wise investment for people who are into that sort of thing.

Quote: But what if you're a stacker AND a collector!!! I think that's where most of us are at. Excellent observation! This can be nerve wracking at times, too, to separate your stacking mindset from your collecting mindset. I have "a bit" of junk silver. It can easily be carried around, it's not like a barrel full of junk dimes. Some of it I'd admit would carry some numismatic premium. I also have bullion ASEs that would probably be more accurately described as more of a stacking part of my collection. Those are more of a gray area acquisition, what side do they fall in to? But the collector side is obviously in full effect when getting another set, or getting a new ASE from the mint. I'm not looking at it by checking spot prices any more, that's useless and frustrating.

I guess I'm both - but a collector first, stacker second.

Quote: I guess I'm both - but a collector first, stacker second. Oh me too! At first I think I started as more of a stacker, until I got more interested in ASEs. I still have a good pile of junk or "constitutional", I guess they like to call it? I used to seek out deals on silver, I'm just not really into it that much now. The last several purchases I've made on junk silver have been from acquaintances approaching me to buy silver from them. I know I pay them more than a coin shop would, but less than I would expect a normal seller would want. I want it to be a good deal for both of us.

How do prices for these ASEs hold up over time? Does it make sense to buy ASE in the after-market after 2-3 years?

John, I Started out as A Collector, First Whitman Book $0.23 Cents 1963 Went into The Must Have More SILVER Mode, (Back then it was Cheaper ) All the While Collecting...50 Years....... Imagine the Pieces Seen, Bought... Now, Less Stacking, More Collecting Sets, COMMEMORATIVES, Classics Ruled as My Classics are Not a Full Complete Set, Just the Greatest Designs of Days Gone Bye, I Love. As Mentioned Prior, We are Thrilled to Receive a Fresh, Newly Minted ASE for Our Collections, With Every New Addition to an Ongoing Set, Our Collections Gain Value, To Another Collector. Thanks Glb, Your Very Welcome, My Fellow American Silver Eagle Coin Collecting Enthusiast

NumisEd, Great Questions, First I find buying Direct from the Mints is My and Possibly Most others way of Receiving a Flawless Example. Aftermarket Sources are Chancy, in that The Seller Knows IF the Example has a Flaw or two, They state they are NOT a collector and You assume all the Liability and chances, The coin Your buying, Probably has Flaws, The Above has Been My Experiences, Some have been Great, Most have NOT. How do the prices hold up over time, Simple answer, Having a Full, Complete Set, You Will NOT lose a Dime, IN fact, The ASE Coins are One of History s Greatest, Highly Collectible Series To Date.... I collect for the Set and Some coins in That Set are worth Many times over the release cost, Keys in the ASE series are Through the Roof with Many, Many, Many times the Release price have they gained.... Hope This Helps, MD

I'm a collector and always will be, but if the Mint keeps unlimited production as a policy there will not be anymore key dates to increase their value.

Quote: but if the Mint keeps unlimited production as a policy there will not be anymore key dates to increase their value. And that is where I think the stackers and collectors diverge. I 'collect' for the coin and the history, not so much the value (although I do track it) Stackers 'collect' for the value (and future increases) for investments
