Too bad the cent wasn't in better shape. Trying to remember to take full reverse and obverse and close up of area from now on.

I think @dear is correct that this is a retained internal die break (or the start of one anyway) rather than a lamination.

Yes, classic 'cracked skull' of an RIDB nature. These show up on '55 Philly wheat cents as as well.
