A number of coins like this I've seen show signs of someone just wiggling a clamshell back and forth until it snaps off. I don't really see that here it is all looks pretty much like it fell off when it fell off without assistance. Either way, it was after the strike. 1966 Kennedy half dollar mint error - lost clamshell lam 10.91g

It came up at auction with perfectly good photos showing the coin very well, but still sold for under $20 including shipping and fees and all that. Remarkable how inexpensive some of these large error coins can be.

Thanks! And I quite like this one so I'm keeping it. But so far I'm up to 14 that didn't make it and so another round goes up this week. Probably should just keep at it as it is fun, but lots of rolls and whatnot here that need attention as well so think I shall go on the hunt. Thanks for that old Lincoln lam link. So many great coins buried in the old posts on this board. It's been a while since I've seen a major lam like that one, but a pretty big and odd-shaped one went on ebay for something like $30 the other day.

That price is remarkable - I'd never have guessed.

That's a cool one! Someone needed an emergency piece of foil for cooking.

TB, The rim must be very dark. What I find in the last time, some play with the Nitric Acid, which allways will darken the Cu.

It's a broken-off clamshell separation, not a clamshell lamination. Lamination errors do occur within clad layers, but they're uncommon.
