Grandpa had quite the collection, great coins I've seen so far.
I think this squeaks into VF20, possibly 25

The gap between the 9 and the 1 in the date looks suspiciously large, and the mintmark looks too big (like you would see on a 1944-D cent). Also check to see if there is a VDB on Lincoln's shoulder, if so, then this is a genuine 1944-D cent, altered date

Wow...thanks. Didn't even cross my (novice) mind that this might be altered. @mrwhatisit - no VDB on Lincoln's shoulder.

altered coin. here are the MM positions to compare. it doesn't match any. the closest match is obv die# where the left side of the MM matches up with the right side of the 9 however its too high and too close to the 9

I found a 1914-D (1944-D) while digging through a bag of pennies. The person defacing mine did not do as good a job as the one you have.

A genuine 1914-D won't have the designer's initial on the shoulder, like your coin does.
