2008 Lincoln Cent No Mint Mark? - Coin Community Forum

Rollhunter1994 Valued Member United States 195 Posts	Posted 04/12/2009 1:26 pm My brother found a 2008 Lincoln Cent while roll hunting that didn't have a mint mark. Is this an error? coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 04/12/2009 8:41 pm 1980-P Nickels, Dimes, Quarters, Halves and 1979 SBA dollars are the first ones listed in the Red Book with the P mints. Pre 1979 Philly coins had no P on them even proof coins. Proof coins started having the S mint mark 1972 for the Dollars and 1982 for the Commemoritives and 1984-W Proofs. The other proof coins started in 1968 with the S mint mark. One exception is the 1999-P Proof SBA Dollar. I'm sure I've left something out and I don't deal with Gold coins. They speak a different language to me. I speak "Poor." Report this Post to the Staff
DNA Pillar of the Community United States 2734 Posts	Posted 04/12/2009 9:06 pm The 'bullion' versions of the American Eagle silver and gold coins, and the 'bullion' versions of the American Buffalo gold coins, do not have a mintmark. The Cent is the last denomination where the Coins made in Philadelphia do not have a "P" mintmark (as was the common practice on pre-1980 U.S. coins). There is a functional reason for this omission. The San Francisco and West Point Mints have on recent occasion produced business strike Cents without mintmarks when Philadelphia's capacity ran short (for whatever reasons), and such Cents would be immediately hoarded from circulation if they had "S" or "W" mintmarks.
