The letters are thin from Die Deterioration and possibly from die polishing.

From the look of the rim, it may be a weak strike.

I was not discrediting what E&V said, I actually agree. The obverse rim just looked underdeveloped. As E&V said, definitely deterioration, as you can see ghosting on both sides, which I don't think I've ever seen this strong on a zincoln.

The devices would be bigger with die polishing. You have to think backwards. Devices are incused on the die. Polishing would take off more metal from the die.

Contra Cujohn, letters will be thinned and shrunken from intentional die abrasion. However, in this case, the thinned and shrunken letters of LIBERTY are the result of "design-devouring die wear". In this form of die wear, the field portion of the die retreats as far as the lowest points of the die's recesses.
