Good Day All.

What do y'all think of this Walking Liberty half I picked up? I was thinking something around VF-40 maybe...

(Sorry the pictures are bad, I need to work on my iphone photography skills. I did take a good video of the coin though, as I've got a real camcorder. )

It looks like it may have been cleaned to me, possibly long ago, looking above the eagle's head on the reverse. I'm no expert, but the colors just look uneven to me.

Your pictures aren't very clear. What concerns me is the gash on Lady Liberty's arm. I'm afraid that could make it a details coin.

The apparent grade is better than XF-40. We need better sharply-focused shots, preferably taken with the coin out of the holder. I'd expect a minimum AU-53 grade based on what I can see.
This is potentially a $1000 coin. Please post more photos if you can.

Looking at the reverse lettering and other details I am not sure this one is genuine.

I'll try to get some better pictures again here tonight.

Thanks for the initial thoughts.

Add me to the list of "questionable authenticity" posters.

If it's real, AU details, cleaned, environmental damage

Can we get a close up of the mint mark & date? I could not find a genuine matching die pair for the date and mint mark. I am concerned about the coin's authenticity, but not ready to put in the fake bucket.

The coin looks like it has been polished and retoned.

if you are using a phone try this for better photos

1. remove coin from holder
2. turn off flash
3. place coin on flat surface with indirect natural light. maybe a window sill in a cloudy day. Use a black or white background to avoid any reflective color
4. move phone about 3in from coin
5. zoom in using your fingers until the coin comes into focus and fills the cameras view finder. if your phone has a portrait selection use that and then press and hold on the coin in the view finder to AF lock it
6. hold phone steady. if you can't then place something on either side of the coin (like books) at that distance and lay phone between them. this will hold it steady and allow you to zoom and take the photo without any blurring

i do agree with a couple others that there are some markers pointing towards a counterfeit. the date being one of them

Agree, straight-on large pics of both sides outside the holder are needed, ideally from two or more angles.

Welp, that is a counterfeit. Hope you didn't get burned.

I'm reasonably certain this is not an original coin. Not 100%, but I'd say better than average.

It appears to be a cast copy. The voids on the obverse such as the large pit in Liberty's right arm resemble casting voids. Tool marks appear to be to right of the date, and the date has issues at the 1.

The overall appearance is rough. On the reverse, there are what appear to be tool marks throughout the wing edge just behind the neck and above the left leg talons. Those are not high relief areas of the coin, which leads me to believe they are tool marks and not scratches since they do not extend across the high relief surfaces. The complete lack of detail on the eagle's left leg is at odds with other sharper areas of the coin.

There is also a flaw left of the H in HALF that resembles a casting bubble or defect of some sort.

Overall, the coin just does not "look" right compared to known examples in the XF-AU range (my own example isn't quite so lofty, so not as much to compare.)

Some of these issues could be due to environmental damage or PMD, but taken as a whole, the coin is suspect and merits a closer look.
