you need to know how to assess any coin that you are purchasing and not trust the slab.

Totally agree! Pricing and quality vary dramatically for some coins with the exact same grade on slabs.

The below photo shows what would be considered a full step Jefferson but would probably not get marked as such on 'my' 2x2's

The picture shows a coin with 5 Full Steps, and as required in the grading standards, any nicks or abrasions needed to be called out. The coin is still 5 Full Steps, as full steps are a consequence of strike and die wear. Contact marks and abrasions do not change that fact, unless they so obscure the strike details that one can't be certain.

For those of us who would like a better understanding of the "full steps" designation, here is a good link with good illustrations.

here is the summery from PCGS link MisterT posted. you can see that they don't even follow their own guidelines.

five separated steps (lines) at the base of Moniticello. Any major disturbance or interruption of these steps or lines, whether caused by contact, planchet problems, or another source, will result in the coin's not being designated FS. Only the slightest weakness on any step (line) is allowed for this designation.

Panzaldi - I've got a couple really questionable FS nickels that might have a shot at 5FS with NGC and be worth the value/price. Can you take a look for me?
