PCGS - Struck in the first year of issue, this 1849 Liberty Gold Dollar split in two during striking due to a weak planchet. Graded PCGS AU50 and housed in our iconic PCGS two-coin holder, it's a gold rush rarity.

That is pretty cool. Definitely not a common sight!

The coin was not split during striking, but rather sometime after circulating for a small period. That conclusion is determined by the even circulation for both sides of the coin. If it was split as an uncirculated coin, the wear would not be identical. Additionally, if the pieces were split upon striking, they would be separated from the get-go and almost immediately lost from each other.

I agree with jacrispies - how can there be wear if it was split in two during striking

I would love to know the provenance. Perhaps it was originally "liberated" by a mint employee...

The chances of a split planchet becoming AU (changing 1000's and 1000's of hands) and staying together, or coming back together, are so incredibly remote that I do question if there is any provenance at all. If there is, I'm all ears.

I'm more inclined to believe liquid nitrogen had a role - and I'm pretty sure that was not available in 1849.

Just sayin'
