I'm trying to find an affordable 1878/1879 CC MSD and it sure looks to me that many of them have their CC mint marks tilted with some looking krazy. These are usually VF type graded coins, some with edge damage. I dont expect to find a MS66 for cheap but I'm suspicious of the mint marks.

Some input from the experts would be appreciated. Was this normal ? I know the mint marks were hand stamped but at the same time this year coin would be a temping coin for the fugazzi tribe to alter.

Ths coin doesn't look bad. https://www.ebay.com/itm/177140255302

This one is tilted https://www.ebay.com/itm/306301299319?_ul=US

I remember some VAM's around the mint marks in the 1879's and wouldn't mind sneaking one of these in. But this is the kind of tilting I'm talking about.https://www.ebay.com/itm/3063012993...organ+dollar

The mintmark positions of all the early Morgans are well studied and categorized by VAM's. For example, here's a listing of the 1879-CC mintmark locations.

The last ebay listing you showed is a VAM-2 with the CC tilted left. It's helpful to be able to match the mintmark to a known VAM to verify authenticity (although obviously not necessary for a graded coin).
