Hello all, As a new member, please forgive me for randomly starting a new topic. I saw the comments about raised rim on a previous thread and wondered if you guys could help. I got this coin from a reliable dealer. They have already confirmed they will accept a return. I was concerned by the colour more than anything, but the rim is another red flag. Since I was submitting to NGC anyway, thought I would add it in just for confirmation, albeit an expensive confirmation but it will help the learning process. So, is this definitely fake or does it stand a chance?

Questionable, yes. But, the rims on later die state indian half eagles can look strange, with rim fins and a wavy texture toward the edge. There does appear to be some reverse depressions that are red flags, but I can't guarantee anything from the photos.
Since the dealer is reliable, is there a chance he will let you swap it out with another coin of the same type? Because you don't feel comfortable owning the coin, I would think that the dealer will take care of you. If he does, slip him some courtesy cash or buy some more coins to make his time worth the trouble.

Thanks for the reply guys. I guess it's not that easy to judge just by looking at some pics. Appreciate your thoughts anyway.
I'll keep buying from the dealer for sure. I've always enjoyed buying from them and they have agreed to return it if it's not genuine. They'd probably accept a return under any reasonable circumstances, even just not being happy with it.
It's already with NGC though. I can post results when I get them back. Last time I submitted, it was like a 6-7 week turnaround (from UK). that was around July/Aug.

NGC calls this the 6th most commonly counterfeited U.S. coin. https://www.ngccoin.com/resources/c...ited-states/I don't think you can go wrong getting NGC's opinion with this one, especially since you are on good terms with the dealer if there is a question on authenticity.

Good point Apcol258. I feel better in my decision to submit it now. It's worth the fee just to find out and gain some more experience. (Don't know my way around here yet. Not sure how to use the quote feature)

Don't know if it's counterfeit, but the 2-tone reverse almost looks like a severe cleaning around "In God We Trust". The scratches in the same area doesn't help either.
