The only reason I am posting this is because NGC has 1956 D MS64 5FS listed for $235. This one would not make my cut for FS but from what I have been seeing they may see this as 5FS.

Your thoughts on grade and if you think a TPG service would stretch this to 5FS?

I'm afraid that would be expecting just a bit too much. that gash is taking away too much surface material. IMHO

I'll say MS-63. I don't think it would qualify as Full Steps.

The hit across the entire set of steps definitely keeps this out of FS territory. Still a nice looking example.

The coin is still 5 Full Steps, as full steps are a consequence of strike and die wear. Contact marks and abrasions do not change that fact, unless they so obscure the strike details that one can't be certain.

Full Steps (FS) is the designation following the numerical grade of some regular-strike MS60 or higher Jefferson nickels that have at least five separated steps (lines) at the base of Monticello. Any major disturbance or interruption of these steps or lines, whether caused by contact, planchet problems, or another source, will result in the coin's not being designated FS.

FS is 5FS. 6FS would have a full 6FS designation on the slab. regarding full steps be aware that the criteria for full steps is all the map. I posted on a thread last week regarding this. showing that many slabbed with that designation have all kinds of marks across the steps. this one imo very likely could receive an FS designation. I suggest enhancing your knowledge base and look at 10 slabbed coins with this designation and you will see what I mean.

this one has a good shot at MS64FS . the marks on the lapel are my only concern

Always respect your experience with FS nickels Panzaldi. Appreciate your opinion and everyone else's. I too am concerned with the lapel marks and it grading a 64 with NGC.

I'm going to do some research on current pricing and then make a decision on whether or not to submit.

I'll keep you all informed!
