So should we call this a hobo counterfeit?

That would depend on who the original engraver was.

I don't think it's counterfeit. More like attempted hillbilly fraud. A coin that fools no one except Jethro Clampett.

The coin arrived. Here's a close-up of the date.

The artisan appears to have used an awl to create this. The numerals are confined in boxes to keep them equally spaced. The 9 is a masterpiece, while the others are a piece of work. Wonder why the engraver felt a need to gouge out the area above the date.

Wow, "piece of work" is right! I wonder if there's any way to tell the actual original date, or is the coin too far gone.

I wasn't joking when I asked for a Sheldon number earlier. At this point a reverse diagnostic is the only way you'd know the date. The only real certainty is that it isn't a 1793.

Good gravy you actually bought it. Looks like the obverse of 1798-1807. I'll give it a few minutes of my time and attempt to attribute it.

The reverse has no major pick up points observable from the photos, impossible to discern a particular marriage.

Can you deduce anything from the remains of the ratio jacrispies?

Not that it affects the value of this coin. Just curious.
