Even career counterfeiters are offended by this!

Can't say much about this one.

At first I was offended, but now think it's charming. I wonder why the "artist" picked 1793? By the way, thq, I have a dime similar to yours but the miscreant was not as good a shot.

It took many attempts with a 22 pistol and I gave it to a grandson. Cents were more difficult (they cracked but didn't hole) and I think anything thicker than a dime would only have dented. I would like to own an original hobo nickel. I would also like to own one of the French Sedan coins which predate the hobo nickels. Not one of the tokens nor one of the SEDAN stamps, but an original hand carved one. https://www.histecon.magd.cam.ac.uk..._NapSat2.jpg

Same, but how can you know it's original vs. a later copycat?

I don't know how you could know. The original carvers weren't experts. There's some incredible coin carving work being done these days and the early pieces would be easy to fake.
I was in a Lenox MA shop years ago looking for Shaker furniture. The dealer had a small neatly made portable sewing table, which matched a Shaker auction picture fairly closely. I asked about provenance and tried to pin it down with certainty. He said
"Well, you know, it's all just stuff."
It was a fair price for what it was and I bought it. But I never knew for sure and eventually sold it as probably Shaker.

Now waiting for my "1793?" cent to arrive....
I've gotten less interesting coins for $85. No one was bidding on this as if it was a real 1793.

Congratulations I suppose, thq. Looking forward to your pics when it arrives. It is a conversation piece for sure.

I almost like it for that price, I think it was a good buy simply for the entertainment value. Quote: I would also like to own one of the French Sedan coins which predate the hobo nickels. It's a pretty sad story in French history. The Prussians defeated them at Sedan in 1870, capturing Emperor Napoleon III along with 100,000 troops. The Second Empire collapsed.
The carved coins were an expression of sarcasm, placing a Teutonic helmet on Napoleon's head. The only one I have has SEDAN stamped on his face. The one you have is a nice one, using a big well-circulated silver 5 franc for carving.

Eek $81 seems like a high price for a coin to chuckle at once. Quote: It's a pretty sad story in French history. The Prussians defeated them at Sedan in 1870, capturing Emperor Napoleon III along with 100,000 troops. The Second Empire collapsed.

So should we call this a hobo counterfeit?
