Had to post this for shock value. First of all, isn't this a a Draped Bust coin (1796+)?

That "?" sure is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

The sad thing is, it seems to be a legit little old-school coin shop in Augusta Maine, just up the road from me. Charming little downtown strip, the kind of shop that is in danger of going extinct. I'm gonna write them a polite note that this just isn't a good look.

I think it looks great. Tramp art, like hobo nickels. The carver had a sense of humor and made a little roof over the date.

It should be priced accordingly. I'm in at $26. I'll help the shop by buying their coin, or at least pushing their bid up. The sky is not my limit.

The question is: Is this an acceptable hole filler?

It delisted, then relisted. I'm still interested. It's an interesting piece of numismata, though not terribly valuable.

In my opinion, this is outright fraud, and false advertising.

The dealer is being unethical by listing the coin in such a manner.

It is what it is paralyze. The dealer offers free returns. And the initial bidding was only $26. It falls in the category of real coins beyond all hope.

It's all about that "1793?" descriptor, when any actual coin shop would know for sure it's not a real 1793. If they advertised it as a Draped 1796+ re-engraved to 1793 date, then fine, but this isn't cool.

As for delisted, I think the original listing is still there but all the bids got canceled, and now some new ones are coming in -

As a professional numismatic dealer you have an obligation to your customers to describe your items as accurately as you can when listing them for sale. I cannot and will not make excuses for a seller who knowingly lists an altered date coin as a "1793", question mark or not, because that implies there is a chance the coin COULD be a 1793, and it obviously cannot.

With 30k+ feedback, ignorance is not an excuse...

I'm bidding on this coin for what it it is, not for what I hope it is. If it weren't for TimNH's post I wouldn't even know about it.

Is the seller being unethical? Maybe "1793?" is his way of saying "you've got to be kidding". Maybe he could have said that more clearly. But so far no one has been taken in. It's not a deceptive modern counterfeit with no returns like we see all the time on ebay.

Interesting object for sure, but I find the description somewhat misleading.
