XF40, sold today on GC. I almost bid on it, one of the few remaining holes in my type set and this would be just perfect. But I couldn't pull the trigger because of this 'rim ding'. What do you think, is this a borderline details coin, I've seen lesser dents get detailed for rim damage although not this exact type. https://www.greatcollections.com/Co...e-PCGS-XF-40

Yes, it looks like rim damage and some minor scratches too. Capped Bust gold pieces get some breaks in the grading room. This one got a big break. Another image:

Big auction house with lots of submissions will get a straight grade on a coin like this 90% of the time. Regular Joe's like us that submit coins like this will end up with a details grade coin 90% of the time. (Yes, I'm a conspiracy kinda guy when it comes to TPG submissions. I've been that way a long time)

I would call it a Details coin. Good for you to take a pass despite the straight grade holder.

Agree, should trade as a details coin.

I would of also passed as I am not going to spend that kind of money and get a coin with rim damage. The coin may have sold for a small discount because of the rim issue.

For $6750 I would have passed too. I don't think it's borderline at all. It's quite deep and the first thing my eye is drawn to when I look at the full coin image.

Thanks guys, I feel better now, these just never come up in a straight graded VF or XF which is what I want for my set, I feel I missed my only chance. But yep that gouge would dominate the scene, so just gotta keep on waiting.

Good job putting more weight on the coin itself rather than the assigned grade. Fun to imagine what they would say if that same exact size damage had been right across the cheek. Rim and edge damage often gets a pass as it's usually not too distracting. The coin still has value, but the level of damage and how distracting it is should be factored into the price.

I would definitely grade it as details.

I think it is borderline. Could see it justifiable in either holder. The surfaces are VERY choice, especially for the grade, so I likely would put it into a straight graded holder myself. If I was buying, I would pay a grade or two back of price guide. It surely is a distraction and should be purchased as such.

PCGS gave it a pass but I think it is large enough to "details" the coin.
