This is an unidentified Roman Empire coin that I'm not too much concerned about. I'll probably get a smack for approaching John in this manner, but all previous attempts by others (jbuck included) have not elicited a response. John if you read this, (or if a reader bumps into John please pass along the message), please we need you at How Far Back Can We Go? Sixth Addition! http://goccf.com/t/364499&whichpage=470#3999260Mods. please remove if this is inappropriate and apply the requisite black mark to my name p.s if anyone can identify this coin I would be much appreciative. The coin is pretty far gone, but why not? I'll go with a rare emperor, Johannes

This does look a lot like it could be one of those 5th century Victories, so can't rule out Johannes, yeah. The usual joke is that you can (supposedly) identify Johannes because he's the only one with a beard, and this sure does look like a beard to me...
Size and (to a lesser extent) weight would help. If this is the wrong size to be a small 5th century AE it's probably not. One of them LRBs for sure though.

There's really very little left of this coin to work from. I'm not even convinced the "beard" is genuine and not just an artifact of corrosion. With essentially no remaining portrait, no obverse or reverse legends, and no recognizable reverse design, I can't see anyone authoritatively figuring this one out without a time machine.

The whole exercise was a bit tongue in cheek, right from the outset. The purpose of the post was to attempt to flush out JohnConduitt and point him towards HFBCWG. That need has probably passed now. The coin in question has resumed it's place in the unknown jar
