Question-About-Mark-On-Nickel-2023-P

This is a 2023 P nickel. Does anyone know what caused the mark on the steps? Thanks

Post-strike damage. Appears to be a hit.

@ire, can you please tell us the date and mint for this nickel? I'd like to add that info to the thread title. Thx.

5 cent 2023 P
It does look like a reed, but why would a dime or quarter be in the nickel run? And it looks raised a bit.

Thx for providing the date and mint. I've changed the title.

Looks like mechanical damage to me. The metal is "smeared" from left to right and there is a small ridge of that material along the right margin. Looks like whatever did this also clipped the letter I.

This roll came from String in Harrisburg, PA. The entire roll except for two coins look uncirculated. I am trying to figure out what could have caused this reed looking mark when this nickel should not have been in a machine with a dime or quarter. But who knows....

Does anyone have suggestions for a microscope with an excellent camera and lighting? I am using a Hayve and just can't get the detail on that mark. Shadows and blurriness prohibit clear view. Thanks

Mrwhiskers, the picture of the lot is with my phone. I think it might be better than my microscope!

It looks like just a contact mark from another Nickel most likely happened during the drop after strike into a collection bin, the continuation of the contact edge of other coin is evident on the upper part of the I of TIC

My guess is that the hit smeared the steps, making it look like it was hit by a reeded coin.
