Over the past few weeks, I have resumed studying bicentennial half dollars. I keep encountering a particular pattern of split serifs and obviously doubled lettering. The doubling is exemplified by the following PCGS certifications for 1976-S Kennedy half dollars, silver business strikes: 47937159, 84915491, 40598951.

I believe this is the same Master Die doubling that Atrox described in the Kennedy half book by Dr. Wiles. If it isn't the same, then perhaps it is related. Earlier this week, I encountered a silver half that really exemplifies the doubling phenomenon. These are the seller's pics, but the coin is enroute, and I will attempt to take more precise images when it arrives.

Hub doubling id a bit above my head, so I'll just watch.

Also - I didn't know that the forums will link to PCGS cert numbers...

Dearborn, I just used the bold and URL tags, and incorporated the link in the tag.

Without the [ ] so it doesn't automatically convert the tags to code:

url link /url
url="link" description /url
url="PcgsSiteLink" CertNumberText /url

The first version will just get you a blue underlined link. The forum will convert your link to a pass-through link. The second one is fancier. You can use descriptive text between the url tags. The link code will be embedded and invisible. This is the way you see most links on web sites. The second technique is a bit more work than just pasting a link and letting the forum convert it, but visually it's a tidy result.

I just looked at all the photos you added to your post. Let me first say that the description for the 76 MDO-001, P, D, S, and PR in the CONECA Master Listings, is "light spread on date". I blew up the three PCGS photos you added, and all of them look like MDD (Machine Damaged Doubling), especially on IN. The other photos you added are for sure MDD.

Atrox, I find it hard to believe that the phenomenon on In God could be Machine Doubling. It is consistent across all three mints. Here is a Denver half with the exact same thing:

The phenomenon on Trust, however, I could easily believe is Machine Doubling. That was my first impression when I saw it. Definitely the R looks like MD. I should have the coin in the next few days, it is already traveling.
