Dear all,

This 1908-S Indian Head penny got a grade of AU-details (Environmental Damage) .Is this because the corrosion around the portrait?

And I wonder if NGS's coin conservation service would be helpful.

Plus: It is asked for about $167, worth buying?

@an, yes that surface discoloration and roughness on the obverse of the coin seems to be what has caused this coin to get a details designation.

Not a bargain but a fair price for the condition. It would be hard to resell. Does it match the grading service slab photo?

The black area looks like black terminal toning that has turned into ED if it is removed the top layer of metal will also come off. The coin is overpriced. You can find one without the damage for a little more money.

@Spence
Thank you! I think NGS won't be able to conserve it.

@thq
It's number is 6736975-003. Pictures on NGC official website looks darker. Thank you~

Copper coins with this much surface discoloration are nearly impossible to conserve.

So Verdi Care is not your endorsement?

Bottom line - copper is much more difficult to restore than silver. Verdi-care is a fine product, but when appplied to darkened splotches this large, the result is likely to be a new surface that is lighter but inconsistent with the surrounding fields, so still a details coin. In my sincere opiniion, this exmple cannot be restored and there is no sense spending money trying to do so.

Yep, that's what gave it the details grade. I would pass on it.

I wouldn't recommend conservation. A fraction of that $167 is grading cost so if you break it out of the slab and then try to conserve it there's a good chance you'll make it worse and lower the value or only a low chance it could be improved. In either case you would then have to have it regraded which is expensive.

I wouldn't buy this, it's a problem coin and will always be one.

Buy a nice xf example for only a few bucks more.
