I'm interested in this coin PCGS gave it a VF Details grade. I have a lot of 179* coins and they usually get some slack. There's a tiny scratch on the reverse above the eagle's beak. I'd appreciate opinions on whether it's a details coin and the VF grade also. The seller is asking $3400 Member ANA and EAC "You got to lose to know how to win". Dream On by Aerosmith

Did they list a reason for the details grade?

I question the toning and the cheek is a little marked up. Overall it is a nice example for grade at a fair price. considering the adjustment marks offen on these, the scratch appears minor. If it was not for the toning, it most likely straight grades at 30/35.
The coin sold in 2021 at Stacks for $3120.

The holder notes scratch VF details. The True Views are total glamor shots and make the coin look at a higher grade.

Hard to believe they would give a 1796 coin a details grade but yes - that coin had a substantial cleaning and retoned (recently) for selling purposes.

Quote: @cipster: "I'm interested" I can only say - IF you want it, get it. But with a details grade it will be a bit harder of a resell if that time ever comes. Still - it's a 1796 - a collectable coin. EDIT: Spelling

Scratches? Because of the short one above the eagle?

The fact it has a detail grade just because it has what appears to be a scratch above the eagle is baffling. I would understand the details grade if it had a scratch that went from the top of the wreath to the eagle's wing for example but is doesn't.

Seems an inappropriate grade based on these pics. Beautiful coin.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'm seeing agreement about the scratch not being a good reason for a details grade. I'm not familiar with True View and that they are glamour shots and the coin won't look like this.

There are numerous small scratches and gouges on both sides. Because of what this piece is, it would likely get a straight grade were it not for the cleaning that is as bad, or worse, than the scratches.
That said, there are certainly similar pieces that got a straight grade and there are details pieces that are much worse. With patience you'll find a low VF or F15 straight graded example that is around the same price. I'd pass.

That sure looks purty to me. I wonder do folks ever crack out a coin like that and resubmit? Maybe on a good day it would make the grade.
