Hello,

Here is something I wrote about my 1979 proof set

1979 Proof Set

Everything expressed below is my opinion only and is not meant to be taken as anything else but as my opinion. Any historical information has been cited.

The 1979 proof set, I love it. I like the packaging, the colors, and of course the coins. This proof set was the first collectible coin item I bought when I first started collecting coins. I wasn't sure where to start and the owner of the local coin shop I happened to be in suggested annual proof sets because they were readily available and affordable. I decided on this proof set because 1979 was the year I was born.

Because this proof set is from the year I was born and because it was the first item in my collection it holds a lot of sentimental value to me. I'll never forget the first time I saw it or took it out of the packaging. I was new to the whole experience, so I didn't know that some wear on the packaging and on the set, itself was OK if the coins don't have any fingerprints or other marks on them and in this case, they are perfect.

I later learned that this proof set has two types and that my set is the more common type 1 set. The type 1 set has a "Filled S" mint mark on the coins and the type 2 set has a "Clear S" mint mark on the coins. Because the type 2 set is not as common and because of the clear S mint mark that set costs more than the type 1 set. I hope someday to be able to own both sets.

My birth year is the only connection I really have to this proof set. I really liked starting at this point though because I got to see and learn stuff I didn't know before. For example, I didn't know what a Susan B. Anthony dollar was or why it was important. I later learned both of those things. Susan B. Anthony was a leader for women's rights for equal pay for equal work, she was a key person in the women's suffrage movement in the 1850's - 1870's. (https://www.womenshistory.org/educa...n-b-anthony)

A lot of people didn't like the S.B.A. Dollar Coin because it wasn't very pleasing to look at and it was too close to the size of the quarter. I'm not sure I would like it as a circulated coin because of its similar size to the quarter, but as a collector coin I think it is cool.

Nice story!

I had similar feelings for my first proof set — 1969 — also the year I was born. The lens was damaged and it, along with all my other proof sets, fell victim to the "great cracking" I performed to fill my Dansco albums.

I eventually acquired another 1969 proof set. The lens is in better shape, but the cardboard sleeve was damaged. Thankfully I saved all the OGP from my now freed proof sets! It is one of the few proof sets I have left intact — along with the Prestige proof sets, which have a fancier OGP and were gifts from my mother).

OH! ABSOLUTELY! Savor that moment as it is going to lead to opening a world of wonder in numismatics.

Ah the ol' Carter Quarter. Bad rap for sure, bad idea in the first place... probably. But fun to collect? Yes indeed! Also a quick, easy, mostly-cheap set to put together and a great starter set for a new numismatist. Also also, a coin that never circulates and 95% of the population doesn't even know exists (or at least forgot about). Conversation starter!

Well there you go. I got a Proof Susie B in 20 coin lot of US proofs, my first US acquisitions. But I had no idea on the history of it. Maybe it's high time I blew the dust off this album and researched them all a bit more. Also, a fellow CCF member sent me a US Proof set that I have barely looked at since it arrived last year(big self inflicted guilt trip happening). Better look at them too.

Hey thanks for sharing, Snitchard.
