My goal for these early Washingtons is not for High Choice like the rest of the set. I am going for a matched set for the '32-'38. The other keys I will be looking for high AU with nice eye appeal. The one thing I am not sure about with this coin is if it will be detailed. I really don't want a problem coin in the set. Tell me what you all think about grade, eye appeal, and if those scratches will detail it. FYI-I didn't pay too much but also did not see the eye scratch as the whole obverse photo misses as well. It was so hard to get all the scratches to show in one photo. Should I return? Seek out another? Edited by captainkurt 03/18/2024 5:51 pm

From what I can see of the surfaces, especially the second closeup, I'm a bit concerned about possible abrasive lines.

It looks good to me but if you don't like it then return it, continue looking for one you would prefer better.

Quote: possible abrasive lines Luster looks great in that area and the whole coin. I'm not worried about possible history of cleaning (edit-or should I be?). Sunlight just caught the surface wrong there in that photo. Obverse photo also hints at circulation wear. I am not worried on that front either.

Agree sight wear, unsure if a details coin.

Once you see that scratch you can't unsee it. Your eyes are drawn right to it.

I'm thinking AU, straight grade.
Errers and Varietys.

I'm going with AU58 straight. I think angle, lighting and blowing it up to that size we are seeing some hairlines that may be difficult to see in hand. I think any circulated coin you blow up to that size you are going to see very fine marks. I don't think the small scratch in front of the brow would detail the coin.
the decision for you is:
what does that area look like in hand? does it match up to the other coins in the set? is the price good for an AU58 straight coin and if the coin was to detail is the price still acceptable?
maybe give us another shot of the obv with just a hair better lighting at the distance of the first photo (no zoom in) and maybe one at just a very slight angle.

Panzaldi, I think you have got it on the money (as do you coinfrog). Thanx to both of you, and others! I graded this from the online photos as MS62. That scratch behind the eye was not visible as was the ever so slight wear. I believe the wear to be slide marks and could go either way as to circulation wear. At MS62, appealing (to me) toning this would have been an acceptable purchase. But, with questionable circulation, scuffs, scratches... it's becoming obvious that I may have a 'problem' coin. One last chance with this photo before I make the decision. Thanx everyone once again!!!

Looks like an AU-58 slider to me.

new photos are good enough for me to adjust my assessment. i think your grade of MS62 is probably correct and MS63 would not surprise me at all. I'm not seeing any signs of circulation
